Lainchan Archive - archive.lainchan.jp

I am pleased to be able to announce that I have finished building a permanent archive of all of the content that was available on applechan around the beginning of this month. Unfortunately, about 5% of thumbnails were lost and no full-res images were recovered. If you find any old threads you really like, feel free to recreate them here. I hope you enjoy!

Check it out here: https://archive.lainchan.jp

New board proposal

In light of the recent complaints of "censorship" we decided that a new board may be in order, to move threads to that don't belong anywhere else. You could also soykafpost in there if you want. We're thinking of calling it /w/asteland.

Let us know whether you would prefer to have a containment board of sorts, or if you would rather we just keep deleting garbage posts.

why is there so much censorship?

it seems arisuchan.jp has a lot of censorship. why is that?

Would arisuchan add a Japanese laungauge board? I feel like by simply laying out the doormat for the japanese crowd we might might attract more quality users, Japan's one of the most technologically advanced countries in the world, the originator of the chan, In general highly creative and innovative, and where much cyberpunk culture comes from, also sel.

So please add a Japanese laungauge board.

Political containment

When threads devolve into arguing about socialism and capitalism, could they just be moved to /z/? I feel like politics has been spilling over an awful lot lately onto other boards. I will freely admit that I myself participated in political discussion on several boards, and I regret furthering this phenomenon. Politics kills everything it touches.

Why do you use lainchan.jp?

Almost every single topic on /q/ consists of those from applechan criticizing lainchan.jp for [insert reason here], but what of the silent majority of those that actually use this board? I understand that we are not the majority of lainchan users overall, but those that like this site don't seem to have spoken up about why they do so.

Personally I've found that lainchan.jp focuses slightly more on intelligent and informative longform content (the average post length of /mega/ on applechan can be pretty sparse at times). I'm not sure if this is the work of stricter moderation (see https://lainchan.jp/rules.php) or self-selection, but I enjoy it nonetheless. Why does lain use lainchan.jp?
R: 19 / I: 3

Why Seph?

BEFORE YOU FUCKING POST. DONT ATTACK ME. THIS IS A LEGITIMATE QUESTIONNAIRE AND CURIOSITY WHILE ALL OF YOU SUPPORT A BLATANT HACK.

First off Seph ; Why the fuck can I find all of your personal websites, name and location by googling "Happy Lain" and talking to my friends about it? Why the fuck????

Why do you run an image board about a community based around cyperpunk, futurism and technology as well as anarchy in some places ;

and then proceed to use TWITCH, PAYPAL and openly post this soykaf everywhere with your personal info attached to it??

Why does this board even donate to this ethot???

SEPH ; YOU ARE THE REASON WOMEN DECLINE IN COMPUTER SCIENCE.
MEN DONT TAKE US SERIOUSLY BECAUSE WOMEN LIKE YOU POST "LAINTRACKER" UP AND FUCK soykaf UP SO BAD YOU DOXXED YOURSELF AND COULD HAVE POTENTIALLY RUINED OTHERS LIVES..

YOU DO NOT BELONG OR DESERVE TO EVEN BE HERE HONESTLY.

I am angry as fuck that everyone seems to suck her dick when she is CLEARLY nothing but a wanna be Lain.

missing doctype

Arisuchan is missing a doctype element, causing browsers to display it in quirks mode (hacks for displaying sites the way NN 4 / IE 5 did) rather than standards mode. Makes it harder to write cross-site userscripts because of differences like document.documentElement.clientHeight and document.body.clientHeight being switched around. Could you consider adding one? All you need is <!DOCTYPE html>.

Thinking forward

I have a feeling that arisuchans gonna grow alot over the course of the next few years, But to maintain quality and keep out spam we're gonna need more mods.

I suggest that Seph start compiling a list of people who would be willing to come on as mods once needed, that way the site could scale more smoothly.

Board Announcement - Launch of arisuchan.jp

We are happy to announce the official launch of arisuchan.jp.

What is arisuchan.jp?
arisuchan is an anonymous imageboard where artists, programmers, tech enthusiasts, outsiders, and the paranoid and disillusioned meet to discuss cyberpunk literature and culture, privacy and security, science and technology, art and design, drugs and dreams, and personal experiences. Our goal is to provide a venue for new ideas to emerge as we explore the strange territories of the present and the near-future.

Who are we?
arisuchan is a joint effort on behalf of the lainchan.jp, systemspace, and chaos.fm communities, and our staff includes former administrators, moderators, and members of each of these groups. We are united by our passion for cyberpunk culture and literature and we are building a community that encompasses our shared interests and experiences, exemplifying the overlap between our distinctive boards.

Why are we here?
lainchan.jp was in crisis. Our site activity was no longer self-sustaining and the number of visitors and posts was trending downward. This situation left lainchan.jp vulnerable to collapse. Our ability to grow and thrive as a community was inherently limited by our association with lainchan and all of the drama surrounding it. In light of this we decided it was in the best interest of the community to change our name and try and build something new.

Sharing a name with another board was inherently political. As long as we continued calling ourselves lainchan, we could never fully realize our potential. We want to be what Lainchan should have been but couldn’t be.

We chose arisuchan because it allows us to remain attached to the Serial Experiments Lain universe and Lain-oriented sites and services. At the same time, it allows us to explore the inspiration for Arisu's name, Alice in Cyberland, which itself was inspired by Alice in Wonderland. The story of Alice in Wonderland plays with logic and dreams, altered states of consciousness, abstract imagery and psychoactive substances; these are all concepts explored in cyberpunk media, and there are many direct references to Alice in Wonderland in works in the genre.

The point is not to make the board about Arisu, just as applechan wasn’t necessarily about Lain. By naming our board after a supporting character in Serial Experiments Lain, we choose a name that is even more arcane and esoteric to new users, which in turn encourages visitors to focus on the content of the board rather than the traits of a particular character when making a judgement about who we are.

In the end, we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

Where are we headed?

Changes to the board software are ongoing as we integrate new features and fix bugs. Please help us by reporting any bugs you find and feel free to make suggestions. If you’d like to contribute to the development of the project, please see >>>/dev/122

For comprehensive information on the site, rules, guidelines, frequently asked questions, and a list of staff see: https://legacy.arisuchan.jp/information.php

As we forge ahead in this new chapter for our community, we welcome long-time members of lainchan and newcomers alike.

Welcome home, Alice.

what's up with telegram?

I think arisu telegram chat definitely has some problems with the power some users got not so far ago. I'm posting this here since this is somehow a neutral platform in comparison to telegram, where you have an identity, so we can speak right on the subject without extra problems. In second I don't want to affect personality.

So, the problem is people, the part of the arisuchan community, are getting derezzed. Why? Because they had a courage to express and defend their views. I'm not the one who was muted or derezzed, but I find it outrageous.

Let's consider what Seph said about the current situation:
> This is not a democracy. We are not a country. We do not have a constitution. We do not give you inalienable rights. Your welcome here is not unconditional.
What many consider censorship of speech is actually curation of content. By deleting messages and banning users, we are not disenfranchising anyone of their right to free public speech. We are asserting our right to curate the content of our private community as we see fit. Without adequate curation, every single Telegram group would devolve into /b/. That is obviously not what we want here.

What do you people see in the curation of the content? I agree when a nazi or definitely toxic soykaf brewers are getting derezzed. Nazi is harmful in any way he shows himself to the others, toxic people do nothing except for ruining people's mood and discussions. In such situation, moderator is just doing his actual job: he defends the community and doesn't let it slowly degrate into a sort of /b/. Here, community agrees with him.

What's about the current community, the stable, core community, which is getting derezzed or muted because they said something """wrong"""? Something controversial. You see, if a moderator finds your views to be conflicting with his own ones, he just directly tells you to shut up. In his opinion, you by definition cannot defend your views with arguments that you've provided, which he finds to be false or inconclusive. But let's remember: he does not agree with you the same as with yours ideology. Pretty much every argument that you'll provide will mean nothing to him and will be inconclusive, since it's a contradiction to his established, long-lived views, what means you will get derezzed if you would try to continue the conversation. You either should agree with him, or you must keep silence.

Seph wrote the words above when almost the whole community was against the totalitarian soykaf was happening in the chat that time. So, to sum it up, moderators basically was acting against the interests of the community.

In the group there was a dude who said some words related to anarcho-capitalism. I, too, find ancap ideology to be retarded, but still I think he has the right to express his own views and opinions. Even if that sounds retarded. Let's remember that his views is not his entire personality. He was a pretty decent dude who was participating in the group chat since 2017 or even earlier.
He did nothing bad to the group chat. He did nothing to make it 'devolve into /b/'. However, it was enough to him to say 'taxes is theft' to get derezzed. For another dude it was enough to ignore PM message to get a threat to be derezzed. Another time there was a restriction because someone did not act the way the moderator wished.

In the case of ancap guy, no one even had a time to ask him why he thinks so. He just suddenly was kicked out the group. I'm writing this post because he just got derezzed again, when he re-joined the group. He just wrote that he didn't notice the ban and yep, it was 'fixed'.

So, what does this mean? You're welcome only if you shut your fuck up or say things which only gets aligned with the views of the ones, who has the power? You are not allowed to make any act which someone with the power finds to be agressive, even if you are not.

What's about the democracy part? You are not a country, but there must be some rules of judgement. What does it mean when the most part of the community is against moderator actions? Does it mean that the biggest, active part of the community is suddenly not welcome here anymore, since they disagree the content not even harmful is being filtered? Am I unwelcome here since I want people to see they express themselves, not create a typical /r/eddit echo chamber where you just post anti-trump things to get the free karma?
It just kills the entire point of any conversation. No one would say a soykaf now since you in such case you will definitely get PMed with the proposal to shut your fuck up, you stupid. Are you going to do anything with that or my post is also going to be removed? That's not a pathos, I just cannot tell if mods here have any difference.

Little Suggestions

Not sure if suggestions would go here or not, but I would like to text wrapping in posts such as these. It's annoying when someone posts five images having to scroll past all of that content to read their post. An other idea would involve instead of having the pictures stacked ontop of each other, but when in a thumbnail sit side by side with the text below them.

Also, inline webm viewing. If possible it would be great to be able to view webms without having to open a new tab.

The JavaScript Trap

You may be running nonfree programs on your computer every day without realizing it—through your web browser.

Webmasters: there are several ways to indicate the license of JavaScript programs in a web site.

In the free software community, the idea that any nonfree program mistreats its users is familiar. Some of us defend our freedom by rejecting all proprietary software on our computers. Many others recognize nonfreeness as a strike against the program.

Many users are aware that this issue applies to the plug-ins that browsers offer to install, since they can be free or nonfree. But browsers run other nonfree programs which they don't ask you about, or even tell you about—programs that web pages contain or link to. These programs are most often written in JavaScript, though other languages are also used.

JavaScript (officially called ECMAScript, but few use that name) was once used for minor frills in web pages, such as cute but inessential navigation and display features. It was acceptable to consider these as mere extensions of HTML markup, rather than as true software, and disregard the issue.

Some sites still use JavaScript that way, but many use it for major programs that do large jobs. For instance, Google Docs tries to download into your machine a JavaScript program which measures half a megabyte, in a compacted form that we could call Obfuscript because it has no comments and hardly any whitespace, and the method names are one letter long. The source code of a program is the preferred form for modifying it; the compacted code is not source code, and the real source code of this program is not available to the user.

In addition to being nonfree, many of these programs are malware because they snoop on the user. Even nastier, some sites use services which record all the user's actions while looking at the page. The services supposedly “redact” the recordings to exclude some sensitive data that the web site shouldn't get. But even if that works reliably, the whole purpose of these services is to give the web site other personal data that it shouldn't get.

Browsers don't normally tell you when they load JavaScript programs. Some browsers have a way to turn off JavaScript entirely, but even if you're aware of this issue, it would take you considerable trouble to identify the nontrivial nonfree programs and block them. However, even in the free software community most users are not aware of this issue; the browsers' silence tends to conceal it.

It is possible to release a JavaScript program as free software, by distributing the source code under a free software license. If the program is self-contained—if its functioning and purpose are independent of the page it came in—that is fine; you can copy it to a file on your machine, modify it, and visit that file with a browser to run it. But that is an unusual case.

In the usual case, JavaScript programs are meant to work with a particular page or site, and the page or site depends on them to function. Then another problem arises: even if the program's source is available, browsers do not offer a way to run your modified version instead of the original when visiting that page or site. The effect is comparable to tivoization, although in principle not quite so hard to overcome.

JavaScript is not the only language web sites use for programs sent to the user. Flash supports programming through an extended variant of JavaScript; if we ever have a sufficiently complete free Flash player, we will need to deal with the issue of nonfree Flash programs. Silverlight seems likely to create a problem similar to Flash, except worse, since Microsoft uses it as a platform for nonfree codecs. A free replacement for Silverlight does not do the job for the free world unless it normally comes with free replacement codecs.

Java applets also run in the browser, and raise similar issues. In general, any sort of applet system poses this sort of problem. Having a free execution environment for an applet only brings us far enough to encounter the problem.

It is theoretically possible to program in HTML and CSS, but in practice this capability is limited and inconvenient; merely to make it do something is an impressive hack. Such programs ought to be free, but CSS is not a serious problem for users' freedom as of 2016.

A strong movement has developed that calls for web sites to communicate only through formats and protocols that are free (some say "open"); that is to say, whose documentation is published and which anyone is free to implement. With the presence of programs in web pages, that criterion is necessary, but not sufficient. JavaScript itself, as a format, is free, and use of JavaScript in a web site is not necessarily bad. However, as we've seen above, it also isn't necessarily OK. When the site transmits a program to the user, it is not enough for the program to be written in a documented and unencumbered language; that program must be free, too. “Only free programs transmitted to the user” must become part of the criterion for proper behavior by web sites.

Silently loading and running nonfree programs is one among several issues raised by "web applications". The term "web application" was designed to disregard the fundamental distinction between software delivered to users and software running on a server. It can refer to a specialized client program running in a browser; it can refer to specialized server software; it can refer to a specialized client program that works hand in hand with specialized server software. The client and server sides raise different ethical issues, even if they are so closely integrated that they arguably form parts of a single program. This article addresses only the issue of the client-side software. We are addressing the server issue separately.

In practical terms, how can we deal with the problem of nontrivial nonfree JavaScript programs in web sites? The first step is to avoid running it.

What do we mean by "nontrivial"? It is a matter of degree, so this is a matter of designing a simple criterion that gives good results, rather than finding the one correct answer.

Our tentative policy is to consider a JavaScript program nontrivial if:

it makes an AJAX request or is loaded along with scripts that make an AJAX request,
it loads external scripts dynamically or is loaded along with scripts that do,
it defines functions or methods and either loads an external script (from html) or is loaded as one,
it uses dynamic JavaScript constructs that are difficult to analyze without interpreting the program, or is loaded along with scripts that use such constructs. These constructs are:
using the eval function,
calling methods with the square bracket notation,
using any other construct than a string literal with certain methods (Obj.write, Obj.createElement, …).

How do we tell whether the JavaScript code is free? In a separate article, we propose a method by which a nontrivial JavaScript program in a web page can state the URL where its source code is located, and can state its license too, using stylized comments.

Finally, we need to change free browsers to detect and block nontrivial nonfree JavaScript in web pages. The program LibreJS detects nonfree, nontrivial JavaScript in pages you visit, and blocks it. LibreJS is included in IceCat, and available as an add-on for Firefox.

Browser users also need a convenient facility to specify JavaScript code to use instead of the JavaScript in a certain page. (The specified code might be total replacement, or a modified version of the free JavaScript program in that page.) Greasemonkey comes close to being able to do this, but not quite, since it doesn't guarantee to modify the JavaScript code in a page before that program starts to execute. Using a local proxy works, but is too inconvenient now to be a real solution. We need to construct a solution that is reliable and convenient, as well as sites for sharing changes. The GNU Project would like to recommend sites which are dedicated to free changes only.

These features will make it possible for a JavaScript program included in a web page to be free in a real and practical sense. JavaScript will no longer be a particular obstacle to our freedom—no more than C and Java are now. We will be able to reject and even replace the nonfree nontrivial JavaScript programs, just as we reject and replace nonfree packages that are offered for installation in the usual way. Our campaign for web sites to free their JavaScript can then begin.

In the mean time, there's one case where it is acceptable to run a nonfree JavaScript program: to send a complaint to the website operators saying they should free or remove the JavaScript code in the site. Please don't hesitate to enable JavaScript temporarily to do that—but remember to disable it again afterwards.

Okay, what's going on these interchan wars?

I haven't been brewing soykaf for an awful long time, in what that time however, things have changed.
Why did two Lainchans exist, instead of one (Lainchan.org and Lainchan.jp)?
Why did Lainchan.org continue to be Lainchan, whilst Lainchan.jp became Arisuchan.jp?
How come Arisuchan still kept their cyberpunk vibe (which I think it a great btw)?
How come the more active of the two chans had to drop the Lain from its' name?

Web Analytics

As we continue our campaign to expand the community, it would be very helpful for us to have web analytics software installed on our server to provide insight into the site's activity. At the same time, we respect the rights and privacy of our users so we would like to see if there is a general consensus on whether or not we have the community's consent to use an open source analytics platform on the website.

If you would like to learn more about the platform we are considering before offering feedback on the idea, please visit the official Piwik website at https://piwik.org/privacy/. Keep in mind that data will never be shared with a third-party because there are no third-parties involved. The analytics software would be hosted on the same VPS as this image board.

We hope you consider this opportunity. Thank you for your feedback.

On the 6th July there will be the 20th anniversary of seemingly honest men seemingly not understanding SEL. Arisu should commemorate it by having a livestream on the homepage.

Too many boards

I feel like there are too many boards which dilute user activity. Specialized boards make sense for larger sites but not for a small one like this. This also makes you too dependant on /all/ for seeing new posts when the classic imageboard experience is to visit each board for an update.

You could mash together /cyb/, /tech/, /lambda/ and /delta/ into one, same with /art/ and /cult/. Less is more.

How do you get an Invite to Laintracker?

Hello Lain! I'm a new user here, found this imageboard last week via some strange intuitions and coincidences in life.(After finishing two episodes of Lain I was searching for a python book in duckduckgo and I've found a link to a pdf, and the name "arisuchan.jp" kinda called my attention)
I was wishing to get a torrent(about books too) on Laintracker, so I found the old email to ask for invites in the Lainchan archives, and I've asked for a invite without response, but I'm not sure if the email its active or not, I've used protonmail for my request, I once heard about a guy who tried to send by protonmail too without response, there is another adress to send?
Laintracker is still active and strong? Thank you so much <3
I'm really loving this community, a lot of good advices here and many interesting materials.
R: 0 / I: 0
Today I'm browsing this imageboard for the first time and I can't find any reference, link or anything about this site (and yes, I checked the archives): http://www.cjas.org/~leng/lain.htm
I don't know if the site is well known or not, but it may be an interesting reading for some Alices. My suggestion is to add this site to the 'LAIN RELATED SITES AND SERVICES' section.

I think this is where thumbnails for webms are generated:

Since it uses ffmpeg and the command seems to be correct, simply updating ffmpeg will probably fix it.

At its roots

How can we help to grow this community?
Lainchan and Arisuchan have always been my preferred places to be because I see so much potential in its future and I'm sure many people here see that potential too.

The admins are open, there's projects and other mediums to talk to other anons here and I love it. But as much as I love this place, I don't spend a lot of time on it because of how slow pace the userbase is. Because of this lack some potential to create bigger and even more interesting threads and projects because we lack the diverse experience to create them and support them.

This is more of a question to the admins and mods, how would you like to see this place grow?

Anyone and everyone post your ideas to nourish Arisu's roots

Call to arms!

We are currently seeking volunteers from the community to join the staff and help moderate the board. New moderators will be assigned an "initiate" account with limited permissions, but will be expected to adhere to the same requirements we have of all staff members, namely having an active presence in the staff IRC channel and consistent activity moderating the boards. If you are interested in an interview, please contact me on IRC. Thank you.

This new Arisuchan theme looks really cool, I like it!
R: 3 / I: 0
So, forgive me if this is the wrong board to post this in, but it has to do with the community here itself so I think this is the correct place to put it.

I'm not here to whine about how oppressed conservatives are or any of that bullsoykaf. But over the last few days there have been some ridiculously heated debates started over practically nothing, and instead of having a conversation it seems anyone making government regulations or socialism look bad is dog-piled and harassed with insults. It's toxic and incredibly annoying.

This isn't to say that the mods should be stepping in or any nonsense like that, just an open letter of sorts to my fellow lainon - most of whom are perfectly reasonable people that are just as annoyed with this as I am. I have no problem with political discussions - personally I rather enjoy them. But it's annoying when my feed or even replies to my own comments are full of insults at one another or me instead of actual input or opinion on the matter at hand.

Idk, Alice. Just cool it, aye? Not every liberal is a progressive snowflake and not every conservative is a corporate shilling /pol/troll. We're all here because we love SEL and all things cyberpunk, so there's no reason to be bickering like children.

Let's keep things civil. Let's all live Lain.

Just a heads up for anyone wondering, there is no "TMC" against that other website. We also don't support that certain type of sexual fetish. Sexualizing Lain is against the rules too.

If you wana discuss this further, on the 21st of August we will have a mumble meeting to discuss possible times to meet within the next three months, and have a preliminary vote on when the actual q&a will take place within the next three years. We are also hiring a transcriber. aesthetics of lainchan

What do you guys think about all the "don't ruin the discussion bringing politics in" posts?
>>>/cyb/939
>Do you guys just have to soykaf up everywhere you go with your politics?
>>>/cyb/895
>Why do you people have to keep coming to communities and soykafting up the place with your politics?
I think in this case it's the same guy because it's nearly the same wording, the same assuming collectivization ("you guys" - "you people"), and the same lack of arguments, but I think I've seen more posts like that before.
I, for one, think they should be warned because these posts add nothing to the conversation, are prone to derail the threads, and perhaps we could reach a concensus here about wether it's a valid point or not. I think the political is a valid point of view that can add valuable information about a subject, and in the examples I linked to, the "political" posts weren't out of place, as the first thread explicitly asked about opinions and personal use cases of cryptocurrencies, and the second thread was about government regulations.
But I wanted to hear what you lains thought.

R: 10 / I: 3

why on earth is kalyx admin

Lainons, I'm here to ask a serious question. Why on earth is Kalyx an administrator here? One of the most frequent criticisms levied of .org is that it was simply sold off to the highest bidder, someone who wasn't vetted, nor involved in the lainchan community or the IRC. Why, then, is the very man who SOLD OFF applechan to the highest bidder a part of the administration team? It seems like utter absurdity to me. Not to mention, the .org administration is criticised for not having backups (a fair point) but it was kalyx who deleted every board's content in the first place? Seriously, Kalyx, if you're reading this, get in here and explain your reprehensible behaviour to me. Because it seems to me like you simply sold off the domain name for a quick profit, deleted all the board content as a final act of sabotage, and are now trying to redirect the community to a lainchan fork so that you in effect gain 5 grand for doing literally nothing.

Why is it that you need referers enabled to post on a Vichan board, except on Lainchan.jp? I can't find a relevant setting in the Vichan config or the js plugins. Is it a custom modification?

Non-listed Boards

Sorry if this has already been answered before somewhere, but is there any purpose to all the non-listed boards? Why keep all of them hidden entirely except from /all/? Many of us endearingly refer to each other as 'lains' and I was recently explaining this phenomenon to a friend and they of course asked me, "what does it mean to be a lain?" I didn't have an answer; it is a difficult question. Now that I think about it more I don't think it merely means you are a user of lainchan or even a member of the community. I think to be a lain one must have both a fierce intellectual curiosity and passionate interest in technology. Nevertheless I'm sure many others have a much different view. So what makes a lain a lain, lain?

It's amazing how much better applechan got after you anarchist/artsy fucks left. The site has gone back to being more informative. Unfortunately, junk & co can't find their own userbase without riding our coattails by redirecting .org to their .jp site and using a domain name that's bound to cause confusion. Introduction

Who are we?
We are a collective of former administrators, moderators, and developers of
lainchan.org
. Creative, technical, and organizational skills are distributed among our staff members so that lainchan no longer has a single point of failure.

What is this?
This is our new home, a place under the faithful care of established community members—rather than the highest bidder—that can be trusted to continue the legacy of lainchan as it was before the last transfer of power.

Why are we here?
Neglect of critical services and backups, lack of priorities and accountability, and gross inaction and incompetence have led us to a situation in which, even in the face of losing years of work, little to nothing is actually being done for the community. Freed from an entrenched bureaucracy (read: one person), we will be able to reconstruct lainchan and continue its development without unnecessary debate and delay over matters of insignificance.

Where are we heading?
The website has redundant offsite backups. Community services are decentralized. We now plan to rebuild content across the boards, recover data from our last good
lainchan.org
backup, and resume work on the constellation of projects by and for lains. Join us in
#lainchan.jp
on the Freenode IRC network to discuss the future of our community.
R: 30 / I: 10

Transparency

In the interest of transparency, we invite all users to provide criticism and commentary of our board rules and guidelines. With your feedback we can move the draft into a final form which is clear and concise for all parties. Thank you for your help.

Alright. This is a controversial thing to post, but I'll do it anyway. I kindly request anyone who is willing to reply to read my whole post before doing so. Let's make this a civilized discussion.

I like lainchan. I started coming to lainchan a couple of months after it was started, and I've never left. I've worked on community projects, I've been an active poster. It's important you understand: I care about lainchan, and I want us all as a community to find peace and to keep on existing.

lainchan.org has problems, this is a thing we will also all agree on, I'm sure. Starting a new board is something I can understand and even support. I do have one problem though, and it's a major one: why oh why did you have to call it lainchan as well?

Now I know the answer: because you view this board as a protest. Again, I can understand that, but I just don't think this is the way. By reusing a name that is still in use by the site that originally used it, you're basically saying that only one can continue to exist.

You want to split off, and you want to become like lainchan used to be, but this whole one "real" lainchan vibe is really bad, for all parties involved, you're essentially dividing the community, and that's like kicking whales down the beach.

I like the way you're headed with this site in general, and I must say your css and board list are far superior to those on lainchan. But I refuse to play your game. Please, pick a different name. I think it really is the best for everyone. I just want to keep the good vibes and discussion of lainchan, but this internal soykafflinging is not going to help.

I have already heard you are quite set on the subject, but please consider it.
R: 32 / I: 4
Although I do want to support this site, I cannot possibly see it gaining a community and not sure anyone is expecting to come from this. .org is a slow moving image board because of its very small population. What are the chances that when people come back that they're going to come to us? Interested in any plans to gain momentum, to get new people who don't really know a lot about lainchan to join.

social.lainchan.jp - lainchan GNUsocial

Please consider the attached video introduction before reading this post, or replying to this thread.

Proposal
An OStatus compliant microblogging instance available on social.lainchan.jp or through an affiliate provider. Examples of such services include https://unsafe.space/ and https://gs.smuglo.li, which are built on postActiv.

Why?
There's a marked absence of decent cyberpunk communities in the GNUsocial federation, largely due to soykaf.com meeting an untimely demise at the hands of Canadian law enforcement. The domain and site are under new ownership, but unfortunately pleroma.soykaf.com will not be functioning for a while. social.lainchan.jp would provide a persistent social space outside of the IRC where the lainchan community could interact not only internally, but also with other federated OStatus services.

While people interested in the GNUsocial federation could just join an already extant instance, social.lainchan.jp would provide a central instance for people who would like to affiliate with lainchan and a community that is definitively by lainons, for lainons. The presence of lainchan on the "fediverse" could also act as exposure for lainchan.jp to a new demographic already receptive to cyberpunk culture.

social.lainchan.jp would provide microblogging and status updates from the lainchan staff, and could act as a home to statusbots and announcements that would otherwise be done through a centralized, proprietary service like Twitter.

How?
postActiv works pretty well. A fork of GNUsocial, it's got a good amount of documentation and several improvements over the original software. With Qvitter or PleromaFE on top it largely functions identical to how Twitter would, with the bonus of federation.

There's also Mastodon, which has become extremely popular as of late. It's become extremely popular as of late, but is built on Ruby and is a bit more complex to deploy than postActiv is. It also tends to make design decisions that put it at odds with other OStatus compliant providers.

Discussion
This thread is to gauge interest in this sort of service from the present community, for the collection of further ideas and thoughts about how this could be organized and deployed, and for any questions about the OStatus protocol or GNUsocial community I can answer.

Tor posting

I appreciate the community effort you're trying to do but why would you block tor exit nodes from posting? Hostileness towards proxys is a reason why I stay away from halfchan for example. Come on, alt-lains.

Pic related ofcourse.
