We have an official Matrix room that hasn't really been advertised enough, plz join.

Also, don't register your Matrix account on Matrix.org since it has problems with presence updates (too much traffic), use https://banter.city/ or https://disroot.org/

It me wish for a mass migration to XMPP or some other unified protocol. There are so many chat applications that it's not unlikely to use one for conversation with a single person; if it weren't so idealistic I would be pushing for it, but we'd just end up with more protocols to divide ourselves with.

I've had some minimalist wishes with HTTP, too - browsing is becoming infinitely more tedious as the actual content gets cluttered with unnecessary widgets and ads (not to mention CSS and JavaScript being mandatory).

Trying to simplify my life. Sold my gaming rig. Going down to just a business laptop. Bought a VPS with 4TB RAID storage to host media instead.

Want to mount this as a permanent network drive on Windows 10 (I must use it for work) so that I may continue to access high bitrate media (as long as I'm connected to the internet) on my laptop which only has a tiny SSD.

Where do I even start, Alice? Google is fucking helpless.

Hey Alice, my beat to soykaf computer (HP Spectre- SSD, touch screen) is finally dead. It'd been resurrected, Frankenstein-ed, and taped several times- but this time- it's really- very dead.

So - it's been nearly 5 years since I've bought a new computer. I'm looking to get something refurbished or used, but I'm fishing for suggestions. Laptop preferable, RAM that can handle video editing and music production, decent storage, good performance.

Any suggestions? Anyone wanting to sell a computer? There's so many options, windows plebe here. But maybe I should just newegg the exact same computer I've been using this whole time? It just used to overheat like it needed a fucking radiator.

Thaaaaaaanks!!!!

I know ThinkPads have been already mentioned, but if you need a portable computer I'd highly recommend the ThinkPad X220. I wasn't really a "laptop person" until I bought a used X220, it's an absolutely rock solid piece of hardware which has replaced my desktop computer. They're very cheap too with a sub 200 pricetag. I have no idea how well it runs Windows though.

There are a couple of ruggedized laptops on the market, but if you're talking about old Thinkpad quality mainstream laptops, not really. New Thinkpads are alright though, certainly better than the regular ultrabook garbage. Decent hinges and still more upgradeable and repairable.

This. I've had my X230 for over a year now and I've been doing a lot of stuff from coding through light video editing to music production and it handled everything I threw at it. Also thanks to coreboot I can boot from mSATA SSDs so the system is pretty fast and I could still cram a 2TB HDD there.
If you'll decide on this one, just make sure you're getting the one with an IPS panel.

Notice all of the profiles are ham grandpas. Probably not going to be a very fun alternet. God knows what kind of weird stuff they get up to in between jawing about their goiters. But it could be an interesting idea to play with.

Certain kinds of extremely high-efficiency compression are theoretically indistinguishable from white noise if you don't have the compression algorithm. In fact any low-entropy bits are a wasted opportunity to compress it more. Wonder if you could build a radio to hide packets in that background static, just above SNR where no FCC boy scouts would find it…

I've been using IPFS pretty regularly for the past year and so far I've been incredibly pleased. In case any of you lains are unaware, IPFS stands for InterPlanetary File System and it is a completely decentralized file distribution protocol similar in a sense to the BitTorrent protocol.

IPFS focuses on being content-addressable and in turn creating a "permanent" web. What this means is that even if the origin of the file is no longer available, as long as someone on the network has the file you can still access it using the same address as the original. It should also be noted that IPFS addresses generally consist of a file's hash but can also use what's called IPNS to create a dynamic address of sorts.

One particularly interesting and useful feature of the Go implementation of IPFS is its use of FUSE to provide a pair of mountpoints on your local filesystem that allow you to access files on the network like you would any other local file. This makes it much easier to write simple shell scripts that utilize IPFS in some way.

Here are some useful resources:
https://ipfs.io
https://ipfs.io/docs/getting-started/
https://github.com/ipfs/go-ipfs
https://github.com/ipfs/js-ipfs
https://github.com/ipfs/awesome-ipfs

Have a project that uses IPFS in some way? Post it here to share with other lains!

Where does Alice source their IR components?

I was looking for parts for my project involving a laser diode and some kind of sensor able to detect the radiation emitted by the laser, after some research I settled for a components operating at any of the 1450nm / 1470nm / 1550m wavelengths, due to their relative popularity.

I started looking for some cheap parts online and barely found anything, ebay has lots of diodes but the cut off is at 980nm, anything higher is either a full industrial assembly (price spanning $200 and up) so buying it just for the diode is out of the question. The only one worthy of mention was a Mitsubishi 1470nm at $7 from mi-lasers but shipping cost to EU was like $40 so back to square one. Aliexpress wasn't much different from ebay and on alibaba all I found was some shady company trying to sell 650nm diodes labeled as 1450nm.

Is there any realistic chance that I, a mere mortal can get a reasonable price from a manufacturer if i request a quote for like 5 laser diodes?

Something that's been on me todo list: see if its possible to write an n64 homebrew that uses the ir in a gameboy robopon cartridge to mess with the tv menu. I know it's possible with a bog standard gameboy color and a tom clancy? game had a feature that did just that. Have everything I need, just haven't got around to opening up the cart\rom to see if its hopefully not too much more fancy than a shift register.

OT, I suppose you can source parts from a broken consumer thing.

>I don't know what power you are looking for but before buying please make sure you have a pair of protection googles rated for your laser power. IR is invisible and reflects in weird ways, plus sellers like to lie about output power. Very risky to toy with above 5mw - eye surgery costs 10.000€+. Goggles are just 50€.
For my use case I'm happy with no more than 5mW, even then it's not meant to operate near humans, also read on some manufacturers page that at 1450nm+ the lasers are semi-eye safe, haviPost too long. Click here to view the full text.

The prices are fucked up, even a red 5mw I would consider expensive compared to ebay but there is no IR diode in 1450nm-1600nm range that is affordable, unless hundreds of dollars for a single diode is "affordable".
If I ever happen to be in the US I'll grab a few mitsubishi diodes from mi-lasers but that's about it.

Let me chime in and say that IMO you are discussing some total noobish soykaf up there.

1k+ waves have extremely bad trasmission rate in the air, are absorbed by almost everything, the devices are reserved for high-end science.

instead normal people go to regular electronics store(e.g. mouser) and buy dirt cheap 600+ leds, photodiodes or laser modules for longer range.

lainon, out.

A lain friend of mine suggested that if they were wealthy they would never build their own computer ever again. They would much rather buy a pre-built computer or have someone else manage the build and cable management. Despite obviously not being as skilled at this as someone that does this professionally I think I would still do it myself. While it can be a chore I find that there is something satisfying about "laining out" and building your own computer in and of itself. Does lain agree?

Someone should probably add to this thread that builsong your own computer is only cheaper at the high end. Competing with huge oems at the low end isnt possible, but their margin on workstations, or gaming pcs is so high that you can easily beat them.

So build it yourself to save money makes sense only for gaming pcs and workstations.

Is it possible to repurpose/reprogram random microchips salvaged from scrap electronics? If so, what tools are required? Is it worth the effort?

 No.2797

You can salvage just about anything. You might salvage expensive chips (i.e. contains gold or is required to fix old hi-fis) or components that you want to use, but desoldering and board work in general is typically done for repairs. There's no shortage of videos and hardware recommendations for this.

 No.2799

>>2796
Nope. E-waste is e-waste for a reason. Modern integrated circuits hide most of the complexity, and most components inside a multi-layer single board. Removing these components and seperating them isnt possible, they are on the order of micro to nano meters in feature size. You can remove 'surface mount' components and salvage them, and removing\ replacing them is a cool skill to have, but these components make up a minority of the device. Further, surface mount chips themselves ics are niche and specific in purpose.

So you will probably collect only large inductors, caps and coils this way. Its 水 though.

 No.2800

Depends on the thing, but it's probably far easier to just hack to firmware re-purpose an entire device. It's not worth it to take the mips out of an n64 to set up something for,, since a flash cart will be more fun… but it might be to do the same with an old hp printer formatter board.

They're work is interesting, sure, and I can't say I don't support them. But to say its science is unfair. Its at best engineering, trying to make cheap, foolproof ways to do things, but they're not trying to learn new things, just to apply learnt things.

 No.2755

>>2273
Nope. Science as research and experiment require highly trained people and generally expensove equipment. The people with the ability generally have no reason to conduct work in isolation - publishing is good for there carreer, and probably couldn't affors to anyway.

Making drugs or networks isnt research or science.

Historically, though, some mathematicians did like to hide their results - Newton, Pythagoreans, and the soln to the cubic. Alchemists, precursors to modern chemists, but not scientists, supposedly did lots of work in secret.

 No.2763

>>2273

I do think it exist, but it would be from passionate people that would have extremely questionable work ethics. Because you need to do stuff beyond the boundaries to actually make progress, and the people that do, always do it in a questionable manner.

So this >>2351 is the best it can get without compromising your work ethics.

 No.2768

there are definitely underground chemists who invent new drugs, and even more who manufacture old ones.

 No.2771

I don't know if I'd call it science but there's underground knowledge for sure. every school of thought (linguistics, religion, physics, music, visual art, philosophy, sociology, etc etc etc) comes from truth and distorts to some degree of falsehood when converting into language and things we can understand. most people only stick to one or at least few because when you get too deep into one circle you're discouraged from exploring others, because of what some people could call the tower of babel. basically just look where you'd least expect to find anything of importance and you'll be surprised to find how much you have to learn from the fools on the other side of the river.
