Welcome to the Bog.

/fsbog/ is the general thread for freelance and small business ownership discussion. Make money online? Do odd jobs around your neighborhood? Mow lawns? Run a small eCommerce business? Thinking about opening a computer repair business in your area? This is the thread for you.

Let's talk the lifestyle, the expectations, the limitations, and pain and struggle of not knowing when your next paycheck is when times are rough, and the sweet freedom of working for yourself.

Resources, tips, personal experiences and stories all welcome.

Fuck Tim Ferriss.

So you need to make money online, and you need it quick
Nothing comes quick in this world, Alice (at least not usually). If you need cash, I'd recommend looking into a conventional 9-5 or even flipping burgers. This lifestyle isn't for everyone, but it is for some people.

Another option is pawning off anything that you don't use, any old or broken technology you don't want to repair on Ebay. Clean out a room in your house and you'd be surprised what kind of stuff you can find to hock online and even more surprised as to the kind of money it could add up to.

>Fuck this, I want to start making some money online right now.

If you really want to, there are lots of Fiverr-style marketplaces online where you can make a decent income just doing menial shit for people like fake product reviews and testimonials. Success in this however largely depends on your ability to sell yourself well and pimp your profile for good ratings so that you become more visible to future customers. I'd recommend starting out with an incredibly low rate on any of these marketplaces or even offer free services to customers in exchange for good reviews. No one said it was going to be easy.

>I really want to make money for myself online freelance or start a business

Look offline, too. Look in your local area for odd jobs. Could make yourself a decent chunk of change, Alice. If you're prepared to do some heavy lifting, lawn mowing, helping people clean out their ratty old homes and garages, you could walk away with cash in hand to spend on stuff you need or better yet re-invest it making more money online.

Here are some ideas for possible online business opportunities that could net you some cash, Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

How do you lainons find clients? I'm kind of in a fuck right now and thinking of starting freelance web development, and maybe some linux sysadmin for VPS's and stuff. The only issue i have is how would i go about finding clients that would give me a sustainable wage all year round

I might know various people who would be interested in purchasing a web site.
If Alice wants to post a portfolio, I might be able to find her clients, on my side, I'd take a 10% commission on anybody I refer. I'm pretty busy, so the key word is might, but if anybody's interested I'll look into it.

A really easy way to find clients when you are just starting out is to go on various websites and just cold call ask them. Church websites are especially good for this. Most of them were made with MS Frontpage in 2004, and will pay a few thousand to have a new site designed and implemented for them. This is my goto when I am down and out as cold calling them almost always works, and you can usually get a sale within the first 10 you ask.

Humans are destroying the planet with carbon emissions, contamination, deforestation, poaching, and a million other things. We're literally facing another mass extinction and there's nothing we nothing we can do about it: major corporations/factories release the vast majority of carbon emissions, so recycling and reducing our own carbon footprint can only do so much.

Can technology really save us? Is Earth as we know it really salvageable?

>my doomsday predictions aren't ideology
Okay. All I was doing was answering op's question. I could probably find some "credible people" who think things will play out the same way I do. Either way it doesn't matter because an appeal to authority doesn't make you right. Anybody who says they can predict the future with absolute certainty is an ideologue regardless of how many graphs and quotes they have. Did I ever say the planet wasn't warming up?

>It is almost never good for anybody.
You're right. If it's not good for anybody, it would be stupid to prioritize yourself when you could get a lot more out of contributing to a system. When people feel stable enough to prioritize themselves over others though, they often do so. That shouldn't be some kind of revelation. You can't have a system with zero corruption.
>Nigeria
That's a bad example to use. Corporations see a potential market there, but growing quickly when you're starting from nothing isn't that impressive. Some people predict they wont make it past this year. If they're right, I'll tell you how much i'm personally affected.

Do you unironically not know that the US/Europe is to blame for most countries being "incapable" of pulling themselves up by their own bootstraps. If a country tries to go against US imperialism like Chile or Granada the US and co will go into your country and overthrow you one way or another.

This is very idealistic, because the feasibility of the tech you describe or let alone the safety of it is so many years distant. We only have 5-15 years to reach net negative. soykaf like perma frost melting, and horrible natural disasters are already occurring. Pair this with the unsustainability of numerous industries. The real thing we should be focusing on is changing the functions of our industry, but soykaf like the oil lobby won’t let that happen.

Would recommend everyone to read this study, it describes a lot of what we could be doing but our societies aren’t.

I want to talk about the breaking up of our online communities. Over the years we've observed many communities disintegrate. The story is familiar at this point. It starts small and tight-knit. Centered around high quality content, civil discussion, DIY ethic, an activist mindset, and accepting different modes of thought. Gradually over time, though, the community grows and starts to attract a new type of member. Trollish, close-minded, often racist/misogynist/anti-semitic, infatuated with soykaf-posting and surface aesthetics instead of substantive thought.

One hypothesis might be that when communities start out, they are self-selected and therefore defined by a common set of values and mutual respect. The more they grow, the less self-selection occurs and the dynamic becomes more dominated by populist values and groupthink. In other words, as the size of a community grows, the more it comes to resemble the population at large. I don't believe this is actually the case. While I believe intolerance and small-mindedness are widespread, I don't believe if you took a random sample of the population you would see represented the kind of reactionary, conspiracy-theoretic politics espoused by the community members I refer to.

Rather, I believe it is an intentional disinformation campaign, designed to break up select communities that would otherwise be capable of organizing a resistance against centralized power. We saw this when 4chan and Anonymous were infiltrated by Stormfront and /pol/ became a breeding ground for disinformation. We saw this with the degradation in quality of 8chan and Lainchan. Our community is increasingly fractured and spread across multiple imageboards, effectively preventing the organization and scaling up of our creative projects.

We need to reverse the tides. The first step is recognizing when a legitimate conversation or project is being disrupted by disinformation. Don't feed the trolls, ignore incendiary comments of no content. Reject all arguments founded purely on grounds of race, sex, religion, or identity politics. The only comments that deserve the reward of acknowledgement are those based on fact, backed up by data, and that contribute constructively to some creative endeavor. Let's stop bickering about ideology and start organizing. Let's produce work that helps to disrupt and dismantle all forms of centralized power.

I know these words have been said in different forms by different people Post too long. Click here to view the full text.

I smell ego-shielding. Book-groups not wanting to discuss a movie isn't the same as a book-group not wanting to discuss the benefits of Marxist-Leninist thought- MLT doesn't care if you want to discuss it- it wants to be discussed, and will force it's way in.

 No.596

There is nothing beneficial in Marxist thought, except if you are the ruling elite. Its core assumption of humans being blank slates and everything being a social construct that can be willfully reconstructed is absolutely wrong, and therefore, every conclusion you reach from this core assumption has no significance in the real world.
Remember that Google employee that got fired for writing a paper on how men and women are different? He was not mosogynistic or anti-diversity. He wanted to improve how diversity is handled so that it would work better for everyone. But those findings were not to taste for the cultural marxist Google elites who insist on men and women being essentially identical, different only in their socialisation (blank slate assumption).
Political correctness is the inevitable consequence of clinging to Marxist thought. Because Marxists base their whole worldview on the blank slate assumption, anything (true or false) that conflicts with that assumption is suddenly perceived as hateful and offensive. That's why that Google employee had to be fired. He was a threat to their castle in the clouds that is built on lies / false assumptions. Because fanatic people are in general ideologically rigid, they rather try to shut down people who find faults in their basic assumptions or arguments. And since political correctness is enforced in every part of public discourse, you can easily infer that this is because those with power to control public discourse (media, universities, …) are fanatical Marxists that willfully suppress any criticism of their ideology.

Political correctness always rubbed me the wrong way, but I never thought too much about it, so I didn't understand why. I was always left-leaning and very liberal, until I found /pol/ where I learned all the reasons why Marxism cannot work and how the public discourse is being tilted more and more to the left, and any far right (or even moderate/centrist (i.e., Jordan B. Peterson)) opinion is completely deplatformed (or at least attempted) in a desperate attempt to keep those who don't think for themselves from hearing or considering the arguments of those who know that Marxism can't work. And after your faith in Marxism has been destroyed, once you look around for other ideologies, you quickly end up in a huge ideological area that is not socially acceptable.
I still share the socialist sentiment, so I ended up with another ideology which seems to work in reality.

He is talking about critical theory's re-application of marxism upon all social conflicts. Also strait marxism is retarded in itself, as it forgets the intricacies of actual financial doctrine. The idea that a company can exist solely off worker exploitation is ridiculous, even for the era of strife the idea came out of. That isn't to say that there exists large corporate conspiracies to keep themselves in power via cartelism, but Marx never addresses this in any of his works.

>t. someone who actually read both

This topic is way off but I also would like to address the op, for he is wrong and obviously not an oldfag. Since the era of /new/ this soykaf has always been the norm on /pol/ and many other places. You can find meme images of the /new/sman dropping nukes on Israel from that era if you browse the archive. Even before /new/, and even 4chan itself, groups like the GNAA were caught up in right wing nihilistic ideologies like ANUS (this is 2000-2001 mind you). The idea that this is artificially formed is pure garbage, and rooted in willful ignorance.

I found this kind of intersting article on "seventh wave feminism". To summarize, it's against technological progress that has the potential to make women biologically and socially obsolete as a group. They're against artificial wombs/ectogenesis, sex robots, gestational surrogacy and egg donation,
>the quest for immortality, genetic engineering of humans, embodiment of human spirit in machine, creation of artificial life, cross-organism genetic engineering, cross-species gestation, and all the many variants of these things
Basically feminist luddites with all the crap that comes with both of those. Do you think this'll just be a fringe thing, or will it spread? People laugh if you bring up the possiblity of women's special status being revoked, but when it actually happens I can see it being an issue.

Maybe tangentially. This is about cyborgs, cyborgs with no "gender". I'm thinking more androids. Not a hybrid of man and machine that lacks our biological identifiers, but a man replacement. Defending women's rights by ceasing to be woman doesn't make sense to me. It's interesting though.
>>574
How do you know any of this? You're making the assumption that something like tennis or fencing was affected by "purification" in the same that human connections will be. While modern fencing is a watered down, hollow version of itself, the whole point of fencing has changed. Tennis may be different from how it started, but it's still entertaining none the less. If anything, even if old tennis values don't exist anymore, new values may have taken their place. Same for chess. Transformation and change doesn't necesarily lead to a hollow, plastic product.

What is human baggage? Why is that baggage necessary? We have never had the chance to form a mutually understanding relationship with something that is dissimilar to us. There's no talking birds or squids that can write, so we have no clue.
>They can potentially fulfill any sort of need you might have
Why do you assume so? There's nothing perfect about our design. A car from 1905 doesn't have any value or character that justifies using it over a new one. Same goes for hunting. I'll stick to my farm grown food. Even if an android is missing something that a human has, it's still an improvement. Do you mean unpredictability? Well of course it's boring if I know everything it's going to do. A predictable game is also boring. But I wont. Unpredictability is part of intelligence. Current relationships aren't perfect and humans aren't perfectly made for each other. We have dumb, base desires which we are smart enough to fufill in a convenient manner. Trying to comfort ourselves by making stuff up is pointless.

You need to slow down and explain yourself. What are you trying to say? Are you saying that there are some corporations with which you are forcibly obligated to do business?

 No.349

Depends on what you mean by "forced"

You have to buy car insurance in America if you drive on public roads, that's probably the most obvious example. However, there are plenty of business with which you are effectively forced to do business. For instance, I can only get internet from a single ISP. What am I going to do, just not have internet? For most people that really isn't an option. Nobody can "force" you to do anything, they can just make the two choices so ridiculously weighted that there is only one realistic outcome. For instance, if I put a gun to your head an told you to eat an apple, most people would say I forced you to eat the apple, because the option of getting shot so heavily outweighs whatever issues you might have with apples. Plenty of businesses operate on a similar way, even if you don't like it you really don't have any better options. You weren't obviously "forced" into doing it, but the same scenario of two heavily imbalanced options was created.

 No.350

>>346
>option to not do business
1) there is a general tendency towards consolidation, which makes it increasingly difficult to avoid a particular business as a consumer
2) you have to do some sort of wage labor or starve, which makes it difficult to completely avoid a particular business as a worker- should your situation become more precarious, you might have to eat your words

The state at least needs to pretend to give a fuck to retain legitimacy. There is more democracy in the US federal government than there ever will be in a
business.
