I knew this would happen with this series but I am surprised it did not happen until episode 08. I really cannot watch anything that involves dissociation or mind control, I made an exception for mr robot but it was painful. And now serial experiments lain too is "triggering"

It's ok, you don't need to watch something that you don't like

 No.2031

You should just let cyberpunk and related things go as a hobby.
It's like a person with narcolepsia and a fear of heights choosing wall climbing as a hobby.

it's not that i don't like it, it's triggering

Don't feel ashamed, Alice. I love Lain more than anything, but it is still very difficult for me to watch.

For those that don't understand, it's not about "not liking it" as >>2030 suggested. It's just for those of us with existing psychiatric issues such as depersonalization/derealization or psychosis, the series is mildly uncomfortable at best and severely disturbing at worst. For me watching it seems to trigger acute bizarre/psychotic thoughts and a state of dissociation that can then linger for weeks afterwards. It sounds like OP has a similar reaction.

Watching Lain is an important experience, but it isn't a particularly pleasant one.

So you're saying you are a giant pussy? Or did I miss something?

"Triggering" ? You're not going to watch something because it upsets you? Sometimes that's exactly the fucking point.

Movies like End of Evangelion are fucking hard to watch, they make you upset, and they are not happy movies- but there is a reason to watch them. There is a reason to experience things that suck.

Life can suck. A lot. And sometimes it's important to know how much it can suck, so you prevent it from getting to that point/you value it not sucking even more

Don't be a baby

Why are you so angry at OP?

If they can't finish SEL because of physiological issues or whatever that's cool.

This isn't about exposing oneself to the suckiness of life, this is about SEL making OP's life actually suck. Hopefully OP can make peace with their issues and come back to the series and fully appreciate it, but for now calling them a baby isn't helping anyone.

This is the thing though, speaking as someone who has watched it multiple times on 10 hits of LSD. When you feel the psychotic thoughts and dissociation they aren't supposed to be scary. They just are.

The sooner you accept those thoughts as vaild the better. You are supposed to GIVE IN to the psychosis, not back away. Take the dive alice, it is great.

Can you atleast define what you mean by "it's triggering"? If you like the art but just don't like how SEL is executed or something you can watch ABe's other works such as Haibane Renmei.

Id love to hear OP's reaction to Texhnolyze lol

It's the dissociation, not it being scary or upsets, to help you understand, some other things that were difficult for me to watch are Fight Club, Mr. Robot, and the My Blood music video

especially this scene: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KiUA9MJ-YVA
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8mn-FFjIbo8

ironically I don't find the original story of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde hard to read, perhaps it's because he physically transforms so I do not see it as dissociation

ignore the italics i was trying use asterisks to link "mr robot" to the first link and "my blood" to the second link

Texhnolyze is to openBSD/plan9 as Lain is to Linux.
It's just too deep for most lains.

>>2098
OP here, I read the wikipedia article of Texhnolyze, it does not seem to be about psychological dissociation, only about transhumanism, which I don't mind as long as it does not lead to the person not being in control of their body, or losing ability to think freely in general

Our point with Texh is that it doesn't need to depict psychological dissociation to trigger you and be too painful to watch. You just need to be a human being (regardless of what you think you are).
Well, provided you get past the first five episodes which basically form and ADHD and normal person filter.
