If you're currently using social networks like Facebook, Twitter, looking for a home after Google+, left social media and you're just dying to get back in please consider using a federated social network to get your message out.

>What's federated social network

Also known as distrusted social network are a service that are spread across different providers, similar to an email. They all speak the same language, but not everyone is playing in the same sandbox.

>Why use Federated social media?

If you must use a social media platform these are the best way to have privacy. Some if you use another provider, but complete privacy on your end if you choose to host your own node.

Social media is mostly for shouting into the uncaring void. Having just bumped a two week old thread to say you don't like the thing, I would think you'd be on board with that.

>why not just "NOT" have a social media account
I thought the OIP made it clear that having a social media account isn't the best for your privacy. But hosting your own federated instance of something like mastodon gets rid of all the issues in privacy (at least I hope) of having an account.

A decentralized Instagram would be great.

In my experience with the "fediverse", social media really brings out the worst of people, even when it runs on Free Software.

Umm.. may I ask about some examples?
Maybe you were just unlucky. In fact, my experience has been quite the opposite

you can't give anecdotes; it's game theory.
people are more isolated, jaded, untrusting and hostile now more than ever. just look at zoomers.

Do you want a list of users I dislike? By the way I noticed it on myself too. Since pressing the favourite star is enough to let someone know that I liked their post, most of my replies are to posts that I have problems with.

Do you have recommended servers to join? It's hard to find a combination of "I know it isn't blocked by or blocking any major servers", open for registration, and worth being on.

The key word in social media is social.
I have social media accounts not because I think they are good applications or because I don't know how much they violate my privacy, but because all my other friends use it and I wouldn't be socializing with them if I used something else.

If you want to keep something private just keep it away from your social media accounts. I find it ridiculous that we need to be hidden 24/7 all the time. In real life as well we have things we keep private and things we keep public. If you have nothing public you won't have a social life.

>if you have to use social media

very few people need to use social media. They need to contact certain people, and those people happen to be on specific sites that fall under the banner of social media. Twitter, tumblr, facebook, what have you. Last I checked none of these sites were part of your federations, which makes them little more than a curiosity to most people.

Eventually, a critical mass will have to be reached. And I fear we are far from that mass for the majority of people.

mastodon, diaspora, and the others allow image posting, if you mean decentralized like bittorrent then look into retroshare

I'm sorry but this whole post is absoloute nonsense. in what world does not using social media equate to having no social life?

Bingo. Instagram is the only mainstream social media I'm still active on. I tried Mastodon and it's just a soykaftier Twitter.
