So me and a friend (hi miek if you're out there) are going to do a course in his school about the evilness of social networks, their habit to fuck you in the ass when it comes to privacy and the fact they are a filthy instrument of da Capital to control the masses.
Basically we need stories, data, single episodes of privacy violations to use as an example, statistic and maybe some articles about political influences and market mechanics behind social networks.
Do any of you lains have some interesting links to share?
This thread should be more or less like the fuckfacebook one but less specific and more elaborated.
Thanks in andvance to everyone.

Make sure to talk about how the True Name Policy disproportionately & negatively affects marginalized & at-risk communities including:
- Transgender Persons
- Social Workers
- Law Enforcement Officials

These are just brief examples that pop to mind. Their policies haven't been shown to actually curb trolling and people who say negative stuff (see imgur any day of the week for the latest facebook user being soykafty).

Good luck

the facebook one is especially detailed as they're probably the worst tech company out there.

I've been trying to think of a way that a person could ethically dox a classmate, for the purposes of using the experience and resulting data as a teaching tool. It would be a very memorable lesson, and perhaps one more effective than presenting anecdotes and research data.

Perhaps you could do a live doxing with a volunteer classmate who clearly expresses their consent in-person. But even that might be tricky, as the path to doxing the volunteer might inadvertently dox others who aren't volunteering.

> Law Enforcement Officials

So what.

Do it without their consent and anonymously send the proof. Tell them they're lucky you were only out to teach them a lesson and not use their data against them.

I'd actually almost like to hire someone to try this on me, see how far they get. (My security plan largely consists of simply not sharing anything by any means as much as possible, secure or otherwise)

Sent an email to fb today about what data they still had on me
Since I fall into this category of not following their true name policy, My account remains in a suspended state.
Someone posted an article on HN today regarding on how people without an account could request data. This really aligns with how facebook makes a ghost account for users, since they still track what pages you access if an embed of theirs is used on the page.

The email I got back
"We don't offer name change support on the form you posted"

Yeah no soykaf sherlocks, I didn't ask for one, I'm asking for my data.
If any human actually fucking read the email I sent them, they'd know clearly my intentions with the whole thing.

Instead they just rely on automated systems to handle such requests.
Which is acceptable, but to what point. You end up with all these cases that are left open because you have to pass some robot. And if you want a human to somehow get to you, you're asked to use the features that are only available to those you can actually just log in

Got Zucc'd :(

This is my favourite article on the topic, read it carefully. I think it's very important to point out that the surveillance is not some accidental byproduct, but the main use-case, even for regular users.

Just remember Facebook gets billions of emails every week. Billions. You're insignificant to them and expecting a human to read yours and get back to you personally is very entitled.

Social Networks are actually very powerful and useful when it comes to free press and media.

You should probably indicate it's a double edge sword. Social media can help people who don't have power, but it's also even stronger for people who old it already.

 No.2812

just point out how twitter is shadowbanning people left and right for "wrongthinking". you don't have to be a rightwinger to find that horrid since the wind can change anytime and it's not like twitter is some minor online community, they actually are influencing the public.
