What kind of magick are you looking to perform? There's been some recommendations on books to read so far, and /fringe/'s list is OK, but let's go deeper.
/fringe/ recommends the Kybalion, which is a good introduction to Hermetics, but you might as well go straight to the source and read the Hermetica directly. I would suggest the Copenhaver translation, as it comes well annotated. You might also want to look up the Emerald Tablets of Hermes, as it fits in to this series very well.
All those books are just to introduce you to a different world view that you might not have considered before. Before you can change the world, you need to change your mind.
Then, you need to change your life. Do you currently meditate? If not, you should get started. The Mind Illuminated by John Yates is a good step-by-step introduction to the practice that is geared towards science-leaning minds. Without meditation, you won't be able to get far in the occult world. Get off any drugs or alcohol you might be on - it's incompatible with this path. Some people recommend a vegetarian diet as well, but that's up to you.
So you can meditate, now what? Initiation Into Hermetics by Franz Bardon is usually considered the gold standard for getting in to the magickal lifestyle in the Hermetic tradition. The Ruggeberg translation from Merkur is the best choice here. How disciplined are you? You will need to have a great deal of discipline in your life to follow this book. Rawn Clark's A Bardon Companion is also a good addition here as he breaks each step of the book down to help you understand what's going on.
Bardon wrote a three part series that was meant to be read in order, starting with Initiation, then moving to The Practice of Magical Evocation, and completing with The Key to the True Kabbalah. I guess my point here is that invocation or evocation of spirits is not something that you're likely going to be able to do right off the bat. People have suggested the Greater/Lesser Key of Solomon, and that might be of use to you, but not when starting out.
Another book you will want to pick up is the Three Books of Occult Philosophy by Agrippa. The Freake/Tyson collaboration by Llewellyn is a good choice here, as it comes extensively annotated, which helps a lot with many of the older terms for things. Llewellyn usually doesn't make a good book, but they did it right here. This isn't necessarily for reading straight through, but will be used for reference if you need tables of correspondence or information on planetary or other matters.
So, you've started all these books or finished them, and you want to branch out now. The Secret Teachings of All Ages by Manly P. Hall is a great source for magickal and esoteric traditions from history and covers a lot of ground. Do not skimp when buying this book - buy the Philosophical Research Society edition. Yes, it's expensive, and yes, it's worth it. You will not have the quality of the illustrations if you buy a cheaper copy.
Alchemy can also be a good synergy for magick, and the RAMS Digital Library contains a wealth of translated alchemical texts. It can be fun to start making an ens or other tincture. Might be worth looking up if you're interested.
The final advice that I'd offer you is that it doesn't really come down to books; it comes down to practice. And before you ask, no, you aren't going to be shooting lightning bolts or making yourself invisible. Perhaps there are adepts out there who can do these things, but they've been around a lot longer than you or me. Crowley was right when he said that "Magick is the Science and Art of causing Change to occur in conformity with Will". But the thing is that most of that change is very subtle. Think of it as influencing the odds at a casino - you still might not win every time, but every now and then you will get a win that you can't explain.
There's also the left-hand path which is more about power, but I don't know much about it so I can't help you there. There's also a whole school of Eastern magic - Tao and the like, which is worth investigation. Again, I don't know much about that either.
