Hello Lains, what about Lenovo ThinkPads, are they ok or not?

The older Lenovos are almost as good as the IBMs; the newer ones are a bit more disappointing but still better than most other laptops out there.

Hello there, Medea

From what I heard, they are no big deal. Also from what I heard, half the reason why people want thinkpads is their lack of that intel management thingie.

if you already have a lot of computer accesible in the net, do you need a beefee laptop?

You can upgrade the wireless, or use ethernet, and provided the thing is in good shape, and use the power of your modern rig over the wired.

 No.737

>>654
they're fine, but they come with all the trappings of modern computers; chicklet keyboards (mind you the Lenovo Thinkpad ones are nice) and modern CPU's with silly half-banked management engines in them.

Most of them are available without vPro which is the Intel product that causes the most grief, and they're still built like absolute tanks.

'regular' lenovos, eg; anything without the 'thinkpad' moniker is going to be absolutely no better than an asus or acer or other budget crap.

I run an X240 for work (my x201 covered with velcro and radio equipment is above) and it's nearly hit 3years, it's been dropped on concrete from chest height, it's had a pot of coffee spilt on it, and it's withstood my general abuse and roughhousing.

Keep in mind the X230's, 40's, 50's and 60'ss like a lot of modern laptops aren't built as conveniently as the larger T4xx's - to replace the keyboard you have to remove the motherboard, etc. You will want a plastic knife/spodge to pull them apart as well.

Hello, what is your oppinion on T61 series , they are pretty old but i whant to make some machine with no blotware, or backdoor in hardware, planing to libreboot it and experiment with arch. Is it a good start point?

 No.748

>>746
Don't get a T61/T61p, I'd recommend looking at the T60 and get one without an AMD chip. You'll have to upgrade the screen, but other than that it should be able to handle libreboot out of the box. Check the coreboot and libreboot hardware sections for more information.

 No.753

 No.767

>>748

Thank you for replying, T60 don't need hardware modulation, and that is release, but why will i have to upgrade the screen ??

 No.772

>>753
what do you mean by 'go through'? I've not had any issues with my x201 or x240 but I've been pondering replacing the x201 with a x220, would be nice to know what the perishables are.

 No.774

>>772
I've been using an x220 for a while and the palmrest is fine. Not much difference in durability from my previous x200.

If you are going the x201 -> x220 way, I recommend that you pay attention to the screen, as it is the weakest point in x220. I'm even thinking of going the opposite way and changing it to an x201 for getting a better screen.

A word of warning about purchasing used Thinkpads on eBay. They're usually in great conditon, even better than described. The one issue I've had with ordering them on eBay from a variety of vendors is that the batteries rarely hold a charge for that long. I'm not sure why this is, but it would be worth it for anyone who is purchasing an old IBM or Lenovo Thinkpad on eBay to also upgrade to one of the better batteries with more cells. Will save you time and frustration.

 No.808

>>776
That is probably why they are up for sale. People think they need a new computer instead of changing out a component.

 No.810

>>776
I'd take that as a given for any 2nd hand laptop.

Just be careful as some aftermarket batteries on eBay don't report back the right stats to your laptops bios/acpi subsystem and you'll have no way of knowing until you've actually bought it :(

Just bought used thinkpad - T400. Turn it on everything works, bring it home and all of a sudden bsod. Try to turn it on again wont do POST, after several tries boots into windows finally and all of sudden it freezes. Installed linux mint to see if maybe freezing and bsod is software fault, linux mint works perfectly from usb - no freezing installs just fine. Boots into mint and it freezes again. So I try memory test, after several tries it gets half way trough and I get memory errors.

Is this just a memory problem? Can memory cause post failure? I know it can cause freezing and bsod in windows. I had some faulty memories and it worked fine in OS that has linux kernel. I am really confused and I don't have any spare parts to do proper diagnostic. Can someone help?

Thinkpad in question is one in the picture.

> So I try memory test, after several tries it gets half way trough and I get memory errors.

Yeah, start off with RAM, take the opportunity to get a decent chunk of it in there. T400's tended to have all of their ram as slot loading rather than only having one slot and the rest soldered onto the motherboard. Speaking of which; that's something you can try. It may already be running dual sticks, (2+2 or 4+4), strip one out, run Memtest, rinse and repeat.

Then as funds permit, work your way to getting an SSD to replace the hard drive, and a fresh battery.

 No.866

>>842
Take the back off take the RAM out, disconnect the HDD and blow out all the dust (there will be heaps). Put it all back together and try it then. If that still doesn't work switch out the RAM if it's still fucked the your motherboard is fucked.

Other side of the coin: If you get an old enough one, you can run GNU/Linux on it fine, only having to use proprietary wifi drivers. For instance, I've been using this soykafty 2013 Acer for about three years now, running almost every distro under the sun.

damnit this isnt 4chan. dont make threads starting with /TPG/

its just so bad, so generic, so absurd and offensive.

 No.1724

>>1723
I agree. I think the process of threads about common topics being turned into dedicated "General" threads hurts discussion, for a lot of reasons.
Like how having islands associated with certain topics weakens board culture, because people often make a beeline for the General rather than search the whole board for topics of interest.
Or like how Generals are too General, and how relying on them makes it harder for people to get answers to specific questions or discuss specific topics effectively.
Or like how there's only so much to discuss about certain topics, so a lot of generals turn into repetitive insider trades.
Or like how some valuable forms of discussion are rendered redundant by authoritative pastebins that people often mindlessly reference.
Or like how… you get the picture.

>>2410
What will you do several years later when x200/t400 won't be able to run a web browser properly and anything made later won't be libtarded? I don't think you have enough balls to go Stallman all the way.

Also this is ridiculous how infested with applegroids the board is. Ridiculous and sad.

I don't think browsers can't go on slurping every kind of function on their way with standards/specs comming as an afterthought. At some point even the smartes heads will lose their tracks. Either a clean up, or let train computers to handle this.

On the subject matter - got an x220 that reboots sporadically approx once a week. Odd ways that i bought it provide for no returns. At least the file systems stay mostly clean.

>>2412
I think that by the time that the xx00 ThinkPads become effectively unusable for web browsing, the prices for the xx30 and xx40 ThinkPads will go down to the same level
Even then, though, a T400 will be perfect for browsing websites that don't rely heavily on JavaScript or anything like that, like Wikipedia, blogs or image boards. So, even after the "mainstream internet life" of it comes to an end, you can buy a new battery, stick it in and still use it as your comfy funposting machine.

Had one of those T61's with the Nvidia cards, they really suck, apparrently you can fix it by reflowing the mobo in an oven.

They're descent machines while they last, I was using it as on old XP gaming rig but that's probably what killed it.

Thinking about getting another thinkpad soon, I got a refurbished T430 for my first one and now I think I seriously want to try one of the older models.
