We might finally see a change in regard to privacy in the smartphone market! I urge anyone sympathetic to the cause spread the word. While it isnt perfect its much better than what we have now.

I still don't trust this company. When they first started their original kickstarter they espoused security and safety, making claims about FOSS BIOS etc. without realizing the vulnerabilities in their platform like IME as well as inherent aspects to the x86 architecture and associated intel chipsets. Sure, they have made steps to work on that now, but honestly they where not very transparent about the faults when they fist started their project and they hooked in a lot of normal people who didn't really understand the issues with the platform they chose.

 No.1507

>>1331
What? Do you even follow them properly? Do id you see how hard they're working on removing IME? You sound like you just took a look at their kickstarter and decided to make a conclusion without doing your research…

it says it's 150% funded

I might be talking out of my ass, actually I probably am, but shouldn't security and privacy be a software issue?
Why would you need to make a phone to combat that?
Could it be, money?

The laptops they sell are soykaf too. If they're still using the same ODM/OEM they were two years ago.

http://4chanarchives.com/board/g/thread/51859295#p51859462

I've also had my hands on those Lafite laptops from Topstar and anyone that calls them "quality" must live in a third world soykaf hole. In fact, the Lafite III sold by PCSpecialist in the UK has gone back to the 13.3 inch Clevo chassis.

I don't have a good feeling about purism because they are a business so one day they will start data mining like mozilla. Thins should be good now but I'm not going to get pre-order one becuse I not like the idea of a mobile phone and so I don't have one and I think on one should have one

 No.1512

>>1510
Except mozilla isnt data mining and how the fuck would they data mine with an open-source device? If you're gonna be skeptic, atleast know what you're talking about.

I'm referring to their business with cliqz which was preinstalled on german versions of firefox

You obviously don't understand that open source != free software != always privacy-respecting.
Google Chromium is "open source" but it phones home. Ubuntu is "open source" but it shows you ads in server bash prompt and sends your local search history to Amazon. Debian is "free software" but it gently asks you upon installation whether you want to participate in their data-mining program. Mozilla collects service information and feeds lists of websites you visit to Google. it is known and they are not hiding it in some proprietary blob. But it is annoying that a user has to make extra steps to ensure every software he uses doesn't phone home upon turning computer on.

>Debian is "free software" but it gently asks you upon installation whether you want to participate in their data-mining program.
It defaults to "no". Kindly knock off this misleading language. Be factual and concise.

Every OS at least pings ntp servers for time sync.
Even Tails visits it's own clearnet website when you launch tor browser in it, this is how they can claim total number of everyday users.

it's 1000% too expensive.

Daily reminder that pic related is the final solution to the smartphone problem
>upgradable CPU daughterboard
>libre drivers (except cell modem and graphics)
>hardware schematics to be released under noncommercial license
also
>physical keyboard
>easily replaceable battery
>dedicated vidya buttons / thumbsticks for emulators
all powered by merciless Teutonic autism

>upgradable CPU daughterboard
"Upgradeability" among single CPU generation is not upgradeability
>libre drivers (except cell modem and graphics)
Freedom to vote (exept local representatives and parliament)
>hardware schematics to be released under noncommercial license
Normalfags will still sell his work for profits
>physical keyboard
cheap flat buttons, no tactile feedback
>easily replaceable battery
And it has Pyra-specific snowflake form-factor. Good luck on finding compatible battery 7 months after release
>dedicated vidya buttons / thumbsticks for emulators
You must be over 18 to post on this board

Also you forgot
>proprietary SATA connector (additional adapter for only $49.99!)
>useless USB 3.0 OTG instead of Type-C

It's still better than whatever alternative

>battery

their previous project still has replaceable parts and it's much older

The pyra would be much cooler if it would be actually being delivered, which is overdue for like 3 years now

Not that anon, but you realize linguistic drift and trends affects you even if you're much older if you're at all social, right?

That's nonfree

> “Free software” does not mean “noncommercial”. A free program must be available for commercial use, commercial development, and commercial distribution. Commercial development of free software is no longer unusual; such free commercial software is very important. You may have paid money to get copies of free software, or you may have obtained copies at no charge. But regardless of how you got your copies, you always have the freedom to copy and change the software, even to sell copies.
> Freedom to distribute (freedoms 2 and 3) means you are free to redistribute copies, either with or without modifications, either gratis or charging a fee for distribution, to anyone anywhere. Being free to do these things means (among other things) that you do not have to ask or pay for permission to do so.
https://www.gnu.org/philosophy/free-sw.html

> Thus, the concept we really need is that of a free hardware design. That's simple: it means a design that permits users to use the design (i.e., fabricate hardware from it) and to copy and redistribute it, with or without changes. The design must provide the same four freedoms that define free software.

of course, that's called capitalism, and they are obviously smart enough to still have a big market. the thing is, can they make enough money to change the cellular ownership so we can start moving towards VoiP calling.

the people in this thread are crazy. $599 is a good price for a smartphone of this caliber. I'm going to save for one and make it totally custom.

anyway, does anyone know how I can preorder from these guys without divulging information? like if I wanted to secretly mail it to (i should go to /paranoid/ shouldnt i?) an undisclosed address and put fake names and just pick up the package locally?
I dont currently have an address and it would really be convenient, expecially if purism is one of those fbi comprimised companies
