what do you want to do?

i suggest finding a project that you actually want to have done.
ideally you want to something you're okay with spending all day working on
since the more you work the more you'll learn.
i can suggest a suitable language for that project if you want.

I spent my first university summer with SICP, although it was after the second semester.

agreed with >>1165 , picking a project you care about and fixing/improving/implementing little, but increasingly complex, things is the best way to go about it. Maybe even this place!

What are your plans after school? What exactly do you want to program? That should inform your decision of what programming language you may want to study next. Want to do machine learning? Learn Python. Want to do data science? Learn R. Want to do high performance computing? Learn Julia. Oversimplification of the choices, but still. You get the idea.

Please. No one learn PHP to work on this site. If you already know PHP, it is much appreciated. Otherwise, please, no.

Just about to do this myself. My first semester exams have just about wraped up and I have a physical copy that I have been wanting to work through. I just installed mit-scheme last night.

iirc nothing is wrong with PHP if you use it for your little pet project. What would be your alternative if you have a little site on a shared webhoster?

You can get a VPS for less that most shared hosting these days. You can even find a decent one for $15 a year or less.

Early PHP was not intended to be a new programming language, and grew organically, with Lerdorf noting in retrospect: "I don't know how to stop it. There was never any intent to write a programming language. I have absolutely no idea how to write a programming language."
